Why change is possible?

Posted on Jan 21st, 2007 by Galia : Peace lover Galia

Sometimes when I talk to people about what we can do to stop climate changes from getting worse and risking the lives of 200 million people in this planet I hear others saying " "you are an idealist"  or " Galia is an idealist" and the next thing I see is that look of pity expressing how sorry they feel for someone who has not lost hope in working for positive change.
We can have many answers to this but I will choose one that came to my mind yesterday.
If change were impossible women would not be allowed to vote, negroes in US would be considered inferior and the front seat of the buses would still be reserved for the white. No matter how ridiculous and cruel all this may sound to you , this was a reality in the fifties and even in the sixties in America!  Negroes were beaten by police or killed in horrible situations just for the colour of their skin. Legal slavery would still exist if we went back further in time. Injustice was part of the legal system..Things did not change by chance. Things changed because a group of people decided that that was not fair. A group of people decided that  the only way to change  that was to work for it! This was not easy at all , but they went ahead .
If they had thought that it was impossible, or crazy or idealistic we would still be having legal slavery, women would be unable to vote, the colour of your skin would still determine which restaurants you can go to, which neighbourhood you can live in, which education you can have or where you can sit on the bus in America. Remember Martin Luther King , remember Rosa Parks. Things do not happen by chance!!
You must be the change you wish to see in the world.... Get out of your car.. walk, run, cycle , recycle, sign petitions to protect the environment, write letters to teh media or/ and the politicians... Be fair and honest in everything you do... and if something does not fit, let's work to fix it! Nothing will happen by chance.
Having said this,I want to thank Darina for her great e-mail to the deputies in Argentina who are responsible for the destruction of native forests .  I am very grateful for the fact that she spent some of her precious time writing to help me with this ...

    See you soon!

Galia, as I read your lovely words I got goosebumps from head to toe. Sister, this is truth! They may call us “idealists,” but what they don't want to admit is that we are the visionaries. We are the ones who are holding up the lanterns for the rest of the world. Just like Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony and Rosa Parks.

I am so proud to know you.

Thanks Annisa. What a wise coincidence!. Let me tell you that I was planning to add some links to your website right here… so I think it is a very lovely coincidence to find a comment made by you.  I will look into the other people that you mention there. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and energy!
